Plywood vs MDF, Laminate vs Acrylic

The boards inside your furniture and the finish on its face decide how it copes with steam, damp and daily use. Here is where each common material belongs in a Nagpur home — and what to ask before you agree to one.

Two decisions that are easy to confuse

Furniture is two materials, not one: the board it is built from, and the finish applied to its face. The board decides strength, screw-holding and how it reacts to moisture. The finish decides how it looks, how it cleans and how it wears. People often compare a board with a finish — “should I get plywood or acrylic?” — when the real answer is plywood with an acrylic or laminate face.

So this guide takes the two questions separately: plywood vs MDF for the structure, then laminate vs acrylic for the surface. Neither has a single right answer; each belongs in some places and not in others.

Plywood

Thin wood layers glued with the grain crossed, so it is strong, holds screws and hinges well and tolerates some moisture. Moisture- and water-resistant grades are the default for kitchens, bathroom vanities and anything near a wet wall.

MDF

Fine wood fibres pressed with resin into a dense, perfectly smooth board. It machines and paints beautifully, which makes it good for profiled shutters and painted panelling, but it swells if water gets into an edge and holds screws less well than plywood.

Laminate

A tough decorative sheet pressed onto the board. It resists scratches, heat and stains, comes in a huge range of colours and textures, and is easy to live with. The edges are sealed with edge-banding, which is where care in fabrication shows.

Acrylic

A high-gloss sheet with a deep, mirror-like finish. It looks striking in kitchens and is easy to wipe clean, but it shows fingerprints and fine scratches more readily than laminate, so it suits people who do not mind looking after it.

Why Nagpur’s climate changes the answer

Nagpur swings from a very dry summer to a humid monsoon within a few weeks. Wood-based boards take on moisture when the air is damp and give it up when it dries, and that movement is what opens joints, lifts edge-banding and makes shutters warp. The drier rooms cope with most materials; kitchens, bathrooms and walls with a damp problem do not.

That is why the edges matter as much as the board. Water rarely gets into a sheet through its face — it gets in through an unsealed edge, a hinge hole or a cut-out for a pipe. A good fabricator seals every edge and every cut, including the ones you will never see.

Check the wall before you blame the wardrobe. If an external or bathroom wall is damp, even the best board will suffer against it. We treat the damp first and leave an air gap behind tall units on walls that are at risk.

Whatever you choose, get it written into the specification: board, grade, thickness, finish, and edge treatment for each item. That is the only way to know you received what you agreed to — and it is how we specify kitchens, as described on our page for modular kitchen designers in Nagpur.

Frequently asked

Plywood or MDF for furniture — which is better?

For carcasses and anything that carries load or sits near water, plywood. For shutters with carved or routed profiles, or panels that will be painted, MDF gives a finer finish. Many good pieces use both: a plywood carcass with MDF shutters where the design calls for it.

Laminate or acrylic for a kitchen?

Laminate if you want something hard-wearing and forgiving, especially with a busy kitchen and daily Indian cooking. Acrylic if you want a high-gloss look and are happy to wipe it down more often. Some kitchens use acrylic for the wall units, which are touched less, and laminate below.

Is MDF safe in a kitchen?

Ordinary MDF is not a good choice for kitchen carcasses because it swells if water reaches it. Moisture-resistant boards exist and can be used for shutters, but for the cabinet boxes under a sink or beside the hob we specify water-resistant plywood.

What is HDHMR board?

A high-density, moisture-resistant fibre board, denser and more water-tolerant than standard MDF. It is often used for shutters and some carcasses. It is a reasonable option where specified correctly, but ask what grade is being used and where.

How do I check what my contractor is using?

Ask for the board type, grade and thickness in writing for each item, and the brand and range of the laminate or acrylic. Then check the stamps and labels on the sheets when they arrive on site, before they are cut.
